About Threadscapes:
A Digital Tapestry of African Fabrics
Threadscapes is a digital mapping and storytelling project that traces the textures and traditions of African fabrics. It starts by mapping African textile designs and describing associated narratives about their uses and meanings. Part archive, part storytelling, it brings together narratives, historical insight, and visual design to honor the ways cloth carries culture across time and space.
This project complements the culturally situated design tool Omari CompuTiles and its use in K-12 computer science classrooms. Both projects reflect the need for digital projects to support culturally responsive and sustaining computer science education and can be used to create curricular materials to support these endeavors.
Threadscapes is designed for educators and students interested in teaching and learning about computer science content and those who are interested in learning about fabric designs from across the African continent.
The site features an interactive map that traces fabric designs across the African continent. While the overlay follows the curvatures of geopolitical boundaries, the author of this site recognizes and affirms that the use of fabrics and designs transcend national borders.
Rooted in the histories of Black and Indigenous textile practices, this site invites educators, artists, historians, and community members to explore and reimagine what it means to preserve heritage with computing.
